Its sad to see but the scallop trawlers have destroyed the sea bed and wildlife of much of Lyme Bay east of the Devon / Dorset border. If you have been down on the sea bed near the Baggi, Heroine or anywhere else ruined, please please drop an email to DEFRA UK or DEFRA Dorset area to express your feelings. Apparently waters under Dorset juristiction are not bound by the same bye laws as Devon waters and the scallopers can ruin the sea bed at their leisure. Surely the seabed deserves some protection from this pure vandalism The 2006 dive season has started at last! The weather has finally let up and we have had our first breath of summer, but hey, its only early so why be surprised. Anyway, scallops are back on the menu, along with a few crustacians and flatties, the vis is an acceptable 3cm on the Baggi and the water a balmy 7 degrees - who needs the Red Sea! The boat burst into life on the first attempt after 9 months lay up, smoked a bit, coughed a bit but then settled down into a fine 2 stroke roar. Good to see the LBDC website is finally out of action, along with the bugger who ran it! Both were a load of C**p so nothing lost there. Did you see that Les Cottrell had been thrown out of the SAA and the BSAC!! Wow, you must have to go some to achieve that sort of notoriety. Not only that but he has made the silver screen, well the one in the corner of your sitting room. The BBC did a major expose on him and his attempts at forming a new club, hidden cameramen and infiltration into his ranks. Caught him out being as iresponsible as ever, putting lives at risk and breaking all the rules. Will he never learn, or better still, will he never just give up and leave diving a better place with out him? I now understand that he has 'left' this new club as well (left? voted out? thrown out? answers please on a postcard). Thanks to the BBC, the newspapers, diving friends and everyone who is making his life hell, he deserves it, keep up the good work. Winter training starts again in October at a pooltable to be decided. We have had a zero failure rate yet again this season. Thanks to all our instructors and dive leaders who have so kindly lent their time and skills on many an evening in the pub to ensure this success. The new training program will start one Thursday evenings at 8.00pm in honiton where the first practical lesson will be on how to buy a round of Stella Artois for us all . Theory kicks off with brushing up on our legal work and communication skills while under the public gaze just incase it is ever needed. Christmas Diner Dance and awards. To be held outside the Chip Shop, New Street on December 18th at 8.00pm. Black tie. Bring your own Tizer. Entry by ticket only at £35.00 per head. Accomodation will be available on the park seats outside the church for anyone unable to drive home. We are expecting a massive turnout so book you tickets now by sending me the money (cash only) in an unmarked brown envelope, receipts will not be given.. AGM Yes,it is that time of year again. This year we are considering joining the BSAC, SAA, PADI, NAUI and any other organisation that will take us. We shall also be selling all the remaining club equipment thats left, all proceeds to vanish without a trace. The constitution has been changed lots of times already without anyone being consulted so this doesn't really want to be brought up at an AGM. We will be raising membership fees yet again, throwing a few people out of the club, not that there are many left to throw out, and generally acting in a quite unconstitutional and undemocratic way. Of course other motions from the floor are invited again this year, however I reserve the right to reject them out of hand without further discussion. Re-election will be automatic for all committee positions as no one will be daft enough to stand against those that I have elected to be there as my stooges. Oh yes, and if you haven't paid your membership fees for the current year or next year or 20 years after that you will not be allowed to vote on anything unless I say you can and you vote the way I say you vote. OK? (By the way, the above policies have been blatantly copied from another local dive club who do actually use such dastardly practices!) SAA & BSAC suspends divers - The Sub Aqua Association have suspended the SAA membership our old buddies, Robin Smith (DO) and Les Cottrell (Chair & Treasurer) of Lyme Bay Diving Club. (now there's a suprise). We understand that this is while they investigate their possible breaching of SAA guidelines and bad clubs practices and the events leading up to the recent tragic loss of one of their members in April. - Question? Is this the wrath of the Slyme Bay Diver extracting his bitter revenge on Cottrell and Smith for (thankfully in hind sight) driving us out of 'their' club 3 years ago? Time will tell. Well yes, see above, now the BSAC have followed suit. Good on you chaps. Steering (or not as the case was). The boat has had a complete new steering system fitted. The old one was corroded, very stiff and finally gave up the ghost the other day, so thanks to Garry at Mobile Marine Engineers (01297 444164) we have new wheel, helm and cables, and the whole package works like a dream. At great expense (£7.95) we now have night navigation lights fitted to the boat so night dives are on the menu again. As the evenings start to close in expect lots of midweek dark dives for those elusive crustaceans. We also have one of those trendy grey waterproof flares boxes mounted on the A frame. If anyone would like to donate tools, flares, money, beer or whatever other dive clubs keep in theirs we would be most grateful as ours is decidedly emptyish at present, it looks the part though! Steve & JY have been at work during the crappy weather starting work on a new consul, and thanks to the local tip recycling centre, we have a new boat rod for a mere 2 quid! Scallop lovers - check out the new recipe section for scallop, mussel and mackerel recipes, with loads more to follow shortly when I find the time.
Photo Gallery. We have started a photo galley of shots taken in Lyme Bay just to prove to all your doubters out there that you can see further than your nose in our supposedly cold dark waters. Many thanks to Peter Glanvill for supplying the first few batches in what will hopefull become an ever increasingly good set of pages dedicated to his photographic prowess. World
Tour. this is still going ahead despite not having any
takers as yet. We are accepting deposits of £1958.76p*per
head to join our 2003/4/5/6/7 world expedition (cheques
payable to Sublyme Diving Club). This might start in the far east,
moving on to the Great Barrier Reef, Cape Horn, The Galapagos and back
via Charlton Bay just outside Lyme Regis. Expect to be away for up to
7 months with a total cost of about £35.00 (plus airport tax). This
will be a fully non-inclusive holiday so bring loads of extra spending
dosh to cover all the things that are left out, such as flights, accommodation,
diving, food, hospital treatment, legal costs etc etc.
